Basic and Cosmetic Dentistry

We are a full service Ajax dental clinic.

New patients at West Ajax Dental will typically receive a comprehensive dental examination. The goal of a comprehensive dental examination is to provide the patient a complete assessment of everything related to oral health.

The comprehensive examination will include:

  • A review of the general medical history to ensure safe treatment and to avoid potential problems related to medications, allergies, or conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes
  • A thorough examination of the teeth and gums to check for cavities, faulty fillings or crowns, gum disease, wisdom teeth, and other conditions
  • A thorough examination of the mouth to screen for oral cancer, jaw joint problems (“TMJ” or “TMD”), abscess, and oral pathology
  • A discussion of treatment recommendations and options
  • A question and answer session

In order to provide the most accurate diagnosis possible, your dentist may recommend a series of low radiation digital xrays (radiographs) in order to fully assess the health of the teeth, roots, and supporting bone.

To make the comprehensive dental examination more interactive and easier to understand, your dentist may use an intraoral camera to display pictures of areas of interest on a computer monitor in front of you. Patients can view their digital xray images on the monitor as well.

Dental cleaning and preventive periodontal care

The common “dental cleaning” gets no respect! Many patients view their preventive periodontal care as “just a cleaning”, but healthy gums are critical to long term oral health. Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing are inflamed, a condition known as gingivitis.

Gingivitis is a result of excessive accumulation of plaque and tartar (calculus) around and under the gumline.

Left for extended periods of time, calculus can lead to gradual loss of the supporting bone that holds the teeth in place, a condition called periodontitis or periodontal (gum) disease. Advanced periodontal disease causes loosening of the teeth and eventual tooth loss.

It is important to remove plaque and tartar routinely. Plaque is effectively removed with a toothbrush at home, but tartar is a hard mineralized substance that requires removal by your dentist or dental hygienist – a procedure called “scaling”.

Traditional hand instruments and modern ultrasonic instrumentation are used to gently remove tartar deposits from the teeth. Polishing removes surface stain and produces a smooth surface that is less prone to accumulating future plaque and tartar.

Cosmetic Dentistry

If you are contemplating any kind of cosmetic procedure, it is very important to have confidence in the clinician you choose to carry it out, and it is extremely unwise to proceed unless this level of confidence has been established.

Dental aesthetics is a topic which is deceptively complex, technically demanding and requires a range of skills that may not be immediately apparent. A prosthodontist credentials and education differentiate their specialty from cosmetic dentistry.

General dentist can take a few specialty courses in cosmetic dentistry procedures and practice cosmetic dentistry. A prosthodontist, like Dr. Sher Shahab on the other hand, is a specialist recognized by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada who has completed 3-4 years of additional training following dental school.

He is professionally recognized as an expert in restorative treatments, which include prosthodontics procedures also associated with cosmetic dentistry, such as implants, crowns, and veneers.

The difference is that a prosthodontist is trained to handle the most complex cases. A prosthodontist may also fill the role of being a lead dentist for conditions presenting various dental needs.

Our Dentist Approach To Cosmetic Dentistry

At West Ajax Dental, we begin with a personalized cosmetic consultation that considers:
Your dental, medical and social history.
If any previous dentists have attempted to carry out cosmetic procedures; If so, have they been successful? If not, why not?
Invest effort and time – as much and as long as it takes to understand the patients perspective and expectations, and to gain a detailed appreciation of the specific things that the patient is happy with, and is not happy with, about the appearance of their mouth, teeth, face and smile
Try to establish the motivation behind the patients interest in cosmetic dentistry.

A Smile You Own

Cosmetic dental treatment in ajax

At West Ajax Dental, we do not impose our perception of aesthetics upon those of the patient. What looks natural and optimal to us may look entirely wrong to a patient.

Our cosmetic dentistry goal is to tailor your new smile to you.

Aesthetics is highly subjective and a dissatisfied patient who feels that their personal wishes have been ignored, will not be reassured by a clinicians insistence that the patients own perspective is wrong, or ill-judged.

We deliver smiles that are as unique as yourself.

Request Your Cosmetic Consultation Today

If you are wondering you should see a dentist/prosthodontist for your current condition, then you have come to the right place.

A prosthodontist can improve your appearance by fixing broken or discoloured teeth and the associated structures with aesthetic dental crowns, porcelain veneers, dental bonding, and customized prosthesis.

When your dental treatment is completed, you will be amazed at the difference in your smile!
